But, I think that American's got a real shitty impression of Diesels back when GM did that conversion of a gas engine and put it in their cars back in the 1980s.
Yup...I had one...Oldsmobile Cutlass diesel...What a POS...Blew the first head gasket at 15,000...That converted gas engine just could not take the pressure...I do not believe they put much thought into that engine...Was worthless when I went to sell it/trade it in...I still see old MB 220 D's, VW Rabbits and Peugeot 504's on the road...They were making diesel cars since way back when...

Mercedes has been buildin' Diesels for decades (so have many other European car-makers) and they run forever, if properly maintained. But, GM did a rotten job and everyone remembers that when it comes to the Diesel engine...
The new generation of Diesels are great. That VW only gets 40 mpg? I've talked to folks that were doing better than that. But, it may have been B.S. too...
If I was in the market for an economy car, I wouldn't hesitate on the Diesel...

A friend of ours has a diesel jetta...Commutes 70 miles each way on the GSP and gets 40+ mpg at 70 mph...He loves it...Had a Nissan before that and drove it 170,000 miles before giving it to his son who turned 17...

It had to be big enough to hold the dogs (the new labradoodle is huge), made in the US, at least as much as possible. Had to go to Co;o Spgs to get a decent deal but that was ok snce my boys live there and we got to see them and the grandkids. We made a vacation out of it, 350 miles up and a long senic trip home thru the mountains.
I almost tried to get transfered to our office in 'the springs', glad I didn't, they shut it down.
I'd like to find a good gas mileage cage for foul weather time now that I have to commute 26 miles one way to work. What kind of mileage does that hyundai get? Seriously I am disappointed in the mpg. On the road we get about 21.5, city is pretty similar. If I had my way for mileage I'd look at the VW Jetta clean diesel. Ihave heard 40+ highway mid 30's in the city plus diesel longevity.

I remember lookin' at 'em at the Los Angeles Auto Show when Hyundi first brought 'em out. Thought they were a top of the line (Acura or something) SUV when I first saw 'em. Then I realized it was made by Hyundi and couldn't believe it...
They also make the "Tuscon" and its a pretty sharp lookin' little vehicle too...
