Or ya could do like I did with my heater a couple of years ago...
I had problems that it wouldn't light. I replaced the thermocouple and it still wouldn't light. I called the gas company out to look at it. The guy took one look and told me it was illegal to have a furnace set up like I had.
No gas shut-off inside the house. I had to go down in the basement to shut it down. The gas flow valve was also screwed up. (connects the gas line and the burner to the thermostat) It needed to be replaced and that was gonna set me back a few hundred dollars (if I remember right)
It was an old floor heater with a thermostat on the wall. We went a year without a heater, all we had in the house were portable electric heaters. They did the job. But, were sorta tough on the electric bill...
That's when I said to hell with it and had an Amana HVAC system installed. Now, we're spoiled! Love the new system, works each and every time! Life-time warranty on the guts too. Did have to call the installer out once, the drain line off the AC condenser was runnin' up-hill. So, we were showin' a leak from the drain pan over-flow. They fixed it in a few minutes. Now, all I do is replace the filter about once a month...

Jeffy:
if you have a gas furnace, it runs, but does not light, you got a bad vacuum switch, (which is not the right name for it, but
Open the front of the furnace up, see if you can find a little cannister that looks like a bad sci-fi movie flying saucer with wire and a hose or two. It should be right there in the front someplace.
Turn the thermostat up so you got a call for heat, then, when the fan starts up, tap that little thing with something. NOT A HAMMER!! a teaspoon works good. Don't hit it real hard, then just wait. If the furnace fires, that little switch is bad. What it does it read vacuum in the chamber, it "evacuates" any left over gas from the previous burn, when it gets to a certain pressure, it allows ignition. If that is it, they cost about 25 bucks, easy to change, even for a Evvv....Eeeeev....rider. (or a twinkie pilot if you got one of them)
Hope this helps,
RSDF
not bad for a History teacher, huh? ROFL

I gotta bud thats pretty good with such matters. Probably won't hit me in the wallet to bad hopefully. If the thermocoupler is bad, you won't be able to keep the pilot light lit. That may be the culprit... Just doesn't wanta take off and run.... Kicks on for a min or 2 then shuts down - ?

Ok, you got one of the older ones. I got one of those programmable types. Been working with computers for years, done some programming and even got a degree behind me in computers and can't figure the damned thing out...
I can turn it on (AC & Heat) and set the temperature I want right now. But, it changes the temperature setting at different times through the day.
Probably gonna have to hire a 7-year old to sort it all out for me...

You need some schoolin'. Proper Southern is not YOU ALL, it is YA'LL.
For instance, you said, "Happy Fall you all"
TERRIBLE Grammar!!!
The correct way to say that is "Happy Fall, ya'll" (pronounced YAWL)
If you wish to use the Plural , it would be
"Happy Fall, all of Ya'll"
Got it? ROFLMBO

RE: "Happy Fall, all of Ya'll"
