Curious Dave.. does your wifes company pay her directly 48.5 cents per mile or does she just get to deduct that on her taxes? I get to deduct that amt on my taxes at yrs end, I just have to keep trac of my mileage.
Valid points Babe...
I haven't driven my truck to work for awhile. Not just because of the price of gas. But, I don't want to mess with my commute in the truck. But, it's been costing me about $8.00 a day, on the bike, just riding back and forth to work.
The OL drives her car as a courier for a radiology group. but, they're pretty generous with the mileage. They give her 48.5 cents a mile. Pays for gas and almost makes the payment.
BTW - El Monte (the city mentioned in that article) is one of the neighboring cities to the town I live in...

It ain't just here. Unless you live in one of the oil producing countries, you would pay just as much or more for gas - AND they make a lot less money than we do. Mexico for example, they pay about the same as we do and they earn very little - if they can geta job. We have just been spoiled and its catching up with us.
The only thing we really can do is support alternative energy - Nuc for electricty and hydrogen for transportation.
Speaking of a new wat to screw ya! Oregon is thinking of repealing their gas tax and going to a fee per mile driven. To accomplish this they want to install a GPS system in very car so they can track how many miles you have driven. Of course they say they are going to "Dumb" down the system so they can't track you - yeah right. Next they will be using it to issue speeding tickets.

Vacation?? What about people just surviing the costs of driving back n forth to work??? Its insane! And what sucks is there really isnt a damn thing we can do about it!! What are we supposed to do? Refuse to buy gas?? I dunno about you guys, but I live about 15 miles from our shop. And in the winter.....thats a LONG walk...lol
I am seriously wondering what is gonna happen in our area after winter hits. People are still paying off heating bills from last year! And then of course Christmas will hit, and of course not to forget the extra cost of GAS! What the heck is the average middle class worker supposed to do?
I know I know.....I should be over on the soapbox...lol......sorry

It wouldn't surprise me at all if pump prices are sometimes incorrect.
Gas has jumped around here by some 13 cents a gallon lately. Was told $3.00 will be the average everywhere for a while. Since people want to vacation they're going to gouge the hell out of us for the summer. Is that surprising?

Are You Getting What You Pay For At The Pump?
POSTED: 5:22 pm PDT July 6, 2006
LOS ANGELES -- An NBC4 exclusive investigation exposes gas pumps that shortchange you. Pumps where you pay for a gallon, but don't always get it.
Joel Grover has found where these pumps are in the Los Angeles area, and he's discovered the government isn't doing all it could to stop you from getting cheated.
The lines are long at the South El Monte Mobil station on Peck Road, where gas prices seem too good to be true.
"$2.99, you can't beat that," says one customer.
Some customers wonder if they're getting what they pay for.
"I wonder if I'm getting a full gallon," a customer tells NBC4.
Just last December, the county found problems with 12 of the pumps here.
It's up to the LA County Department of Weights and Measures to test gas pumps to make sure you get the exact amount you pay for. Under State law, the County is supposed to inspect every pump at least once a year.
But NBC4 found they're not doing that. Like at the Chevron station in Paramount on Rosecrans, where two weeks ago, a county inspector found a problem called "meter creep" with two pumps. That's when the meter keeps rolling and charging you, but the pump has stopped giving gas.
"This pump could've been overcharging a lot of customers?" NBC4's Joel Grover asked the County inspector.
"It could have been," he replied.
The inspector shut down the pump until the station fixes it, and he admits the county was six months overdue in testing these pumps.
"With gas prices as high as they are, shouldn't you get to every station at least once a year?" Grover asked Jeff Humphries with the LA County Department of Weights and Measures.
"Yeah, we should. We definitely should," Humphries replied.
And what happens when the county finds pumps that are in violation of the law? Sometimes, NBC4 found, the county doesn't penalize the station, even though it has the power to.
"In the past you were seeing violations but not writing up citations?" Grover asked Humphries.
"I would have to say yes," he replied.
And when they do issue penalties, the punishment can seem light. NBC4 found that out after looking through the last two years of fines.
Like the one issued to that Mobil station on Peck Road in South El Monte, where inspectors found 12 pumps with meter creep. State law allows the county to penalize the station up to $250 per pump. But the County fined them just $100 a pump.
"They could've been making a lot more than that off inaccuracies?" Grover asked Humphries.
"They could have, depending on how long it had been going on. Our mandate really isn't to beat people over the head, it's to bring stations into compliance," he replied.
And how would the gas stations that are caught with problem pumps explain it?
NBC4 tried asking the manager of that South El Monte Mobil, but he refused to talk.
The county says it plans to hire more inspectors in the next three years, so they can inspect stations more often. If you suspect problems with gas pumps, contact the service station and the LA County Department of Weights and Measures.

We ARE gettin screwed every which way we turn. Heating costs are skyhigh......Electric is sky high.....water is expensive(not to mention alot of cities are having probs with water quality) and with gas prices skyrocketing....it causes shipping/freight to go skyhigh. Groceries have gone up! School fees, taxes, clothes, the list goes on and on. Its gotta give somewhere! Lets not even get into Health costs and insurance. Middle class is gonna disapear pretty damn quick at this rate! The rich will get richer, and the poor will starve!
It's a bummer. The other side of this is: Hey, I have to pay extra to live in the best country in the world. Sorry for getting political, my son in law just joined the Army.

| Gotta agree with ya on the utilites.. Our Elec. charges have went thru the roof. Local Sewer Co switched and combined with the local water company. Sent out a bill for sewer and water that was double the norm. Said it was a one time charge and that it will all be back to normal next month, but f*ck it was $106. for 1 mos billing.

| I saw diesel at a normal brand station at 2.72, so at the truck stop it should be under 2.70. I'll check on gas today. Last week I filled up the truck and it was 2.92 a gal for diesel. Go figure!
