Boeing's Back In The Tanker Dogfight
Lisa LaMotta, 06.18.08, 2:10 PM ET

Boeing has been fighting for the American way, or at least for getting its own way. On Wednesday, the jumbo jet manufacturer saw its luck take a turn for the better.

The U.S. Government Accountability Office, an investigative arm of the Federal government, gave Boeing's appeal for the contract for refueling tankers for the U.S. Air Force some legitimacy, according to TradeTheNews.com. The GAO said that the Air Force made a number of errors when awarding the contract to Northrop Grumman and European Aeronautic Defense and Space. The office recommended the Air Force revisit its decision.

In February, the Air Force awarded the $35.0 million contract to the partnership. Boeing asked the GAO to review the contract citing cost and other factors. The Air Force had called for medium-sized tankers, but then chose the larger model offered by Northrop and EADS.

The prominent role of EADS in the contract has drawn criticism at a time of slowing in U.S. economic growth. (See "Controversy Continues Over Air Force Contract")

"We had an excellent competition, two great proposals and one proposal clearly delivered better value and better capability," John Young, the defense department's under secretary in charge of acquisitions, said in April. "I think it's going to be dangerous to set aside valid source selections on a political basis because where does that stop?"

Northrop conceded that the Air Force made calculation errors when estimating the life cycle costs of the competing tanker models; ultimately showing that the Boeing model was more-cost effective.

Shares of Boeing were up 1.4%, or $1.06, to $75.43 after the news, while Northrop-Grumman was down 1.4%, or $1.03, to $70.06.

Woman, 52, sues Victoria's Secret, claims injury from defective thong

JUNE 17--As she was attempting to put on a Victoria's Secret thong, a Los Angeles woman claims that a decorative metallic piece flew off the garment and struck her in the eye, causing injuries and a new product liability lawsuit against the underwear giant. Macrida Patterson, 52, alleges that she was hurt last May by a defective "low-rise v-string" from the Victoria's Secret "Sexy Little Thing" line, according to a lawsuit filed last week in Los Angeles Superior Court. A copy of her June 9 complaint, which does not specify monetary damages, can be found below. Patterson's lawyer, Jason Buccat, told TSG that a "design problem" caused the decorative piece to come loose and strike Patterson in the eye, causing damage to her cornea. He added that the eye injury, which caused Patterson to miss a few days of work, will be "affecting her the rest of her life." Patterson is a traffic officer with L.A.'s Department of Transportation. Prior to the lawsuit's filing, Victoria's Secret officials asked to examine the garment and the decorative piece, but that request was rejected by Patterson's counsel. For those unfamiliar with "v-strings," the undergarment is the Victoria's Secret variant on the "g-string," which has long been favored in the battle against visible panty lines.

Spider monkey climbs garden hose to scale walls and flee zoo in Michigan City, Ind.

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (AP) -- MacGyver's got nothing on this monkey.

A spider monkey new to the city's Washington Park Zoo used a garden hose to scale the walls of a moat and make a break for freedom.

Workers were cleaning the moat at the time Wednesday. Zoo Director Johnny Martinez says workers had figured the monkeys would remain inside their enclosure during the cleaning even though the moat was empty of water.

However, one monkey made it past the moat, grabbed the hose and jumped onto the roof of a water filtration plant.

The zoo staff recaptured the adventurous monkey at a nearby boat dealership, where they found it perched atop a white and blue speedboat.

Martinez says the freedom-seeking monkey is sociable and was not any danger to people.

Police: Officer kills man who beat child to death

Mon Jun 16, 1:14 AM ET

Police killed a 27-year-old man as he kicked, punched and stomped a toddler to death despite other people's attempts to stop him on a dark, country road, authorities said.

Investigators on Sunday were trying to establish the relationship between the suspect and the child they say he killed Saturday night. The Stanislaus County coroner said the boy appeared to be between 1 and 2 years old based on his size, according to county sheriff's deputy Royjindar Singh.

"It's been a long night of wondering, 'Why?' — not only for the officers and the passers-by who stopped and tried to help out, but for anyone. Why would somebody do this?" Singh said.

Singh said the coroner does not plan to confirm the identities of the suspect and victim until Monday. Because his injuries were so severe, the child will have to be identified through a blood or DNA test, he said.

The suspect had a child's car seat in the back of his four-door pickup truck. The truck caught the attention of an elderly couple at 10:13 p.m. Saturday because it was stopped in the two-lane road facing the wrong direction, Singh said.

As they got closer, the couple saw the man brutally beating the toddler behind his truck and throwing the child on the ground, according to Singh. Two or three other cars stopped, an unusual number to be passing through the remote area surrounded by a dairy, a cow pasture, a cornfield and a farmhouse, he said.

"What we got from witnesses is he was punching, slapping, kicking, stomping, shaking," Singh said. "They tried to intervene and get involved, but their efforts really didn't have an effect. The suspect was engaged in what he was doing. He just pushed them off and went back to it."

A sheriff's helicopter responding to emergency calls from the area landed in a cow pasture at 10:19 p.m. carrying a Modesto police officer who shot the man to death after he refused an order to stop beating the child, Singh said.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate the toddler, who was not breathing when they arrived. The boy was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No children within the dead boy's age range have been reported kidnapped or missing in Stanislaus County, Singh said.

The incident happened on Bradbury Road about 10 miles west of Turlock, a city located about halfway between Sacramento and Fresno.

Cops: Women Turn Teen Boys Sleepover Into Sex Party

Two Pennsylvania women are facing charges stemming from a sleepover involving six teenage boys.

Angela Honeycutt, 38, and Lynne Long, 45, both of Bucks County, Pa., are accused of a series of allegedly sexual incidents April 14 as the teens, ages 14 to 16, attended a sleepover at Long's Lower Makefield home.

Honeycutt, a mother of two young children, is accused of having sex with a 14-year-old and performed sex acts with a 15-year-old, CBS3.com reported. She also allegedly open-mouth kissed some of the minors, exposed her breasts to the teens, entered a shower with a juvenile and engaged conversation of a sexual nature, the station reported.

Long is accused of watching, listening and instructing the teens not to say anything.

Honeycutt is charged with statutory sexual assault, unlawful contact with a minor and related charges. Long is facing charges of endangering the welfare of children and corruption of minors.

"What is so particularly outrageous about this is the violation of trust," Lower Makefield Twp. Police Chief Ken Coluzzi told CBS3.com. "You think you've seen everything and then all of a sudden, another report of an outrageous crime comes in."

Authorities were tipped off to the incident after one of the boys involved told his parents, the station reported.

The women surrendered to authorities Wednesday and were released on bail.

'Cruzin Cooler' Can Go Up To 13 MPH

POSTED: 9:47 am PDT June 10, 2008
UPDATED: 6:57 pm PDT June 10, 2008

One New York man's Memorial Day fun ended when police pulled him over while he was driving his motorized cooler.

Leslie J. "Bomber" Marr, 57, was charged with driving while intoxicated and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle after the police saw him swerving on the street and driving on the sidewalk in his "Cruzin Cooler," Whitehall Police Chief Richard LaChapelle told the Post Star newspaper.

Marr's electric-powered cooler was filled with 14 beers and has room for 24 cans and ice, Fox News reported.

Under New York state law, driving any motorized vehicle must be done without alcohol, including motorized coolers. In various states, other modes of transportation in which driving is prohibited while intoxicated include lawnmowers, boats, bicycles, golf carts, wheelchairs and horses.

The "Cruzin Cooler" Web site features talk show host Ellen Degeneres riding a cooler. The site praises the vehicle, saying it "combines two basic necessities of life, the ability to have cold food or a beverage handy along with the means to get somewhere without walking."

According to cruzincooler.com, the motor or electric-powered cooler can go up to 13 mph and has hitches to attach a wagon that can pull a 400-pound load on level surfaces.

Child, 4, Shoots Self at Sam's Club With Grandma's Gun

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A 4-year-old girl grabbed her grandmother's gun and shot herself at a Sam's Club store in Columbia, S.C., authorities said.

Police Department spokesman Brick Lewis said the child took the gun from her grandmother's purse Monday and shot herself in the chest.

He said the child's grandmother has a valid permit to carry a concealed weapon. She has not been charged with a crime.

Lewis said the child was rushed to a local hospital and was recovering after undergoing emergency surgery. Hospital officials wouldn't release her condition.

The store was closed while police investigated the shooting. It reopened Monday afternoon.
