Exxon has record profit again on soaring oil prices
32 minutes ago
Exxon Mobil Corp (XOM.N) said on Thursday soaring oil prices pushed its second-quarter earnings up 14 percent, again breaking its own record for the highest-ever profit by a U.S. company.
Net income in the quarter rose to $11.68 billion, or $2.22 a share, from $10.26 billion, or $1.83 a share, last year.
Exxon -- the world's largest publicly traded company -- previously set the high-water mark for quarterly earnings in the fourth quarter of last year, when it brought in $11.66 billion.
Despite the new record, Exxon's results lagged behind analyst expectations.
The company posted operating earnings of $2.27 a share in the quarter, which exclude a $290 million charge related to the recent Supreme Court ruling in the Exxon Valdez case. Analysts, on average, had expected the company to earn $2.53 a share, according to Reuters Estimates.
Revenue in the quarter rose about 40 percent to $138.07 billion.
Exxon both produces oil and refines it to make gasoline, and profit margins for gasoline were weak during the quarter, holding back earnings slightly.
The company said earnings from its exploration and production business rose about 68 percent to $10.01 billion. But its refining and marketing earnings fell about 54 percent to $1.56 billion.
U.S. oil prices averaged slightly less than $125 a barrel in the quarter, nearly double prices from a year earlier. Gasoline prices only rose 25 percent during that same period, resulting in weak profit margins for the fuel.
Shares of Exxon Mobil fell 2.2 percent in pre-market trade after its earnings were announced. Through Wednesday's close, they were down about 10 percent this year, underperforming the Chicago Board Options Exchange's oil index (.OIX), which has fallen about 5.2 percent over the same period.

Well they can't use the black targets anymore some maybe its a new form of firearms training......LOL
I'm just trying to figure out why an LAPD cop was walking around Long Beach with his gun drawn???
It turns out, the guy was carrying a shotgun. Supposedly, he pointed it at the Long Beach cop and got shot for it...
The whole story on this one is sorta sketchy...
And they can't shoot blacks for sport anymore. Too much of that seems to have happened here lately. Lots of noise in the local press. So, yeah, I guess they gotta start shootin' each other now...LOL

The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed Wednesday that one of its officers was shot and wounded by Long Beach police.
LAPD Officer Sam Park said the officer was shot early Wednesday in Long Beach. The wounded officer was identified as 26-year-old Jason Geggie, a Long Beach resident.
The Long Beach Police Department said the wounded officer is in stable condition.
The Long Beach department said the 26-year-old man was shot at 12:30 a.m. after officers responded to a call of a man walking on the street with a firearm. The reporting party said the man was brandishing a firearm near Termino Avenue and 4th Street.
"Officers responded to a report of a man walking down the street with a firearm," said Zapalski, speaking from the scene of the shooting. "They contacted the man and an officer-involved shooting occurred."

It is not that I hate him...I have no respect for him and resent what has happened to this country under his watch or his administration...Granted, it is not all his fault but he is supposedly the Commander & Chief and the bottom line stops with him as he said not to long ago...His primary job is to take care of the USA which I believe he has failed miserably at...Just look at where we were before he came into office and where we are now...Just look at our debt, the economy, his spending policies, foreign aid...My biggest issue is the economy, immigration and that he got us involved in a war that we had no business getting involved in...JMHO...This war is killing us financially and spiritually...Just look at the billions that have been wasted on Iraq...Look at all the soldiers that have been killed...For what? And when they come home we don't even take care of them...Those billions should have been spent here in the USA to help Americans...I do not mean to sound selfish but I do not care about Pakistan, the Sudan and those other countries...It is their problem let them deal with it...It is a dog eat dog world and the strong survive...Times have changed...We can't save the world as much as we would like to but we should do whatever the hell we can to save the USA...After we take care of the USA we could help pro USA countries...
I could go on but I will stop ranting...

| The constitution gave congress control of the purse strings and so far neither party has shown any restraint in the last 10 years.

marc: serious question, not looking to start a discussion, but why do you dislike Bush so much? Maybe I am stupid, but I cannot figure out why he is hated so much. Everything I hear him blamed for, he cannot do by himself, the Executive Branch doesn't have that much power. He fired judges, he gets in hot water, Clinton fired judges, thats one of his perks. Clinton DID lie, under oath, but Bush is the big liar. I just don't get it.

Last time I checked, the President proposed a budget and the Congress and the Senate were given an opportunity to tweak it and send it back for signature. Negotiations back and forth until a compromise is reached.
I also don't recall the Executive Branch having the ability to propose anything as far as spending or new laws.
That is part of the duties of the Legislative Branch. Executive Branch can approve or veto only. If there is a veto, that can be over-ridden with a 2/3rds majority on the vote...
Something just wrong with the whole article. Its full of partisan bullshit.

Shit...Just what we need...More debt...Another opportunity for foreigners to buy into the USA...
Government announces plans to borrow $27 billion
By MARTIN CRUTSINGER, AP Economics Writer1 hour, 22 minutes ago
The Bush administration gave details Wednesday on how it plans to borrow the billions of dollars it will need to cope with the soaring budget deficits.
Those plans include raising $27 billion by selling a new 10-year note and a new 30-year bond at the regularly scheduled quarterly auctions to be held next week. The government needs to borrow $171 billion during the current July-September quarter, the second highest quarterly borrowing total on record.
The increased borrowing needs reflect the exploding federal budget deficit which is projected to more than double in size this year and to hit an all-time high of $482 billion in the 2009 budget year.
The administration released the new deficit forecasts on Monday. It blamed the surge on the sagging economy and the effort to keep the country from falling into a deep recession by mailing out 130 million economic stimulus payments.
Democratic critics charged that the soaring deficits showed the total failure of the Bush administration to put the government's fiscal house in order, however. They contended that whoever wins the presidency in November will inherit a huge fiscal mess that will severely restrain the next president's ability to fulfill his own campaign promises.
The administration projected that the deficit for this budget year, which ends on Sept. 30, will total $389 billion, more than double the $161.5 billion deficit for 2007. For the 2009 budget year, which will cover the first year of the new president, the administration is forecasting a deficit that will surge to an all-time high in dollar terms of $482 billion, far exceeding the old record of $413 billion set in 2004.
That deficit estimate could soar even higher. It does not include the expected full cost of funding the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan or the costs associated with a massive housing rescue measure that Congress passed last week and President Bush signed into law on Wednesday.
As part of the housing measure, Congress voted to increase the national debt limit by $800 billion from $9.815 trillion to a new limit of $10.615 trillion.
The borrowing plans announced by the Treasury Department on Wednesday include raising $17 billion by selling a new 10-year note on Aug. 6 and raising $10 billion by selling a new 30-year bond on Aug. 7.

Interesting...
More heads should be rolling. But, that last paragraph, this is the first I've heard of that. Seems all I've been hearing locally is that Boeing is a bunch of whiners for protesting the contract going to EADS/Northrup/Grumman...
Key Air Force Official on Tanker Program Quits
By AUGUST COLE
July 29, 2008; Page A13
A top U.S. Air Force acquisitions official is stepping down, becoming the most senior weapons buyer to depart since the unraveling of a $40 billion contract to buy aerial refueling tankers.
The Air Force said Kenneth Miller, a senior Defense Department official with more than 30 years of government service, will leave at the end of the month. He was the service's point person with Congress on the tanker program.
Mr. Miller held the title of special assistant for acquisition governance and transparency to the secretary of the Air Force. Before coming to the Air Force in 2005 to help the service with its weapons purchases, Mr. Miller worked for the Navy on a variety of acquisitions-related issues.
In June, the Government Accountability Office found eight major faults with the Air Force's decision to award the tanker contract to Northrop Grumman Corp., which teamed up with Airbus parent European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co. to offer an Airbus plane for the mission. Boeing Co., which lost the competition, protested, leading to the GAO's ruling.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates said earlier this month that he would reopen the tanker competition with a new fast-track bidding process that will deliver a winner by the end of the year.
Mr. Miller technically retired in February after 34 years of service, but Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne persuaded him to stay on. Mr. Wynne, along with the Air Force's chief of staff, was ousted by Mr. Gates last month over the Air Force's handling of nuclear-weapons security. Mr. Miller, a member of the government's senior executive service, couldn't be reached for comment.
The Air Force has been under intense scrutiny over its alleged mishandling of a variety of high-profile weapons contracts, including the plan to buy 179 aerial refueling tankers. Despite efforts to make such acquisitions more transparent and resistant to protests, the GAO has continued to find fault with the Air Force's ability to pick a clear winner.
Before the tanker protest was upheld, the GAO twice found in favor of Lockheed Martin Corp. and United Technologies Corp.'s Sikorsky unit, which disputed the Air Force's decision to award a $10 billion contract for search-and-rescue helicopters to Boeing. A new winner for that program could be decided as soon as October, almost two years later than originally planned
