World's Ugliest Dog' Dies
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- A celebrity pooch named Sam has died.
With a hairless body, crooked teeth and a tiny tuft of hair on his knobby head, Sam was billed as the ugliest dog in the world.
Owner Susie Lockheed said he died Friday, just short of his 15th birthday.
Sam, who had his own Web site at SamUgliestDog.com, first captured ugliest-dog honors at a California fair in 2003 and had won the contest both years since.
He was a purebred Chinese crested hairless and his looks made him an international celebrity. He made the British tabloids and was on TV in Japan. And, somehow or other, Sam was even on the radio in New Zealand.
He also once compared hair with the famously coifed Donald Trump.
On top of that, there were Sam T-shirts, calendars and coffee mugs. And he had three doggie pals: TatorTot, TinkerBell and PixieNoodle.

Police Accidentally Shock Nude Man In Privates With Taser
POSTED: 8:48 am CST November 22, 2005
FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. -- Police in Florida say a man who was accidentally shocked in his private parts by a Taser is behind bars.
Jeremy Miljour is charged with indecent exposure, resisting an officer and criminal damage.
Police said he was found naked, breaking windows and accosting women. When he didn't stop as ordered by arriving deputies, he was shot with a Taser.
Cpl. Matt Chitwood said one of the Taser prongs accidentally hit Miljour in a tender area and got stuck. He said officers are taught to aim for the torso, but that it was difficult to aim because Miljour was moving.
Miljour was taken to the hospital and then to jail.

Scooter Company For Seniors Accused Of Being Rascals
POSTED: 5:31 am PST November 21, 2005
MANTUA TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- A company that makes scooters for senior citizens and people with disabilities is under fire amid allegations of high-pressure sales.
A weekend story in the Philadelphia Inquirer said Electric Mobility Corporation, which sells Rascal scooters, has been the target of more than 350 complaints or refund requests just in New Jersey.
The newspaper said there also have been complaints from five other states.
Some buyers allege salespeople told people they could try out the scooters but actually had them sign purchase agreements. Others said they felt cheated by salespeople who erroneously told them Medicare would pay for the devices.
An attorney for the New Jersey-based company said it doesn't exploit, mislead or coerce customers.

Residents Stymied In Attempt To Change Name Of Dicks Street
Council Says Change Could Be Costly To Businesses, Residents
POSTED: 7:22 am PST November 17, 2005
WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- Residents wanting to change the name of their West Hollywood street because they call it embarrassing are being stymied by the City Council, according to a published report.
Michael John Fisk has conducted a petition drive since February to change Dicks Street to Dickson Lane after years of feeling frustrated and embarrassed for living on a quiet residential street whose name is also a slang word for male genitalia, the Los Angeles Independent reported.
In West Hollywood, residents or property owners may petition the City Council to rename streets, which requires public hearings before a final vote by the council.
However, Fisk's efforts hit a snag last week as the City Council decided not to approve plans to adopt an official process for future street renaming efforts.
"It would be an incredible inconvenience for everybody who lives on the street to have to reorder checks and to send out change of address information to everybody they know," said Councilman John Duran, who was opposed to the idea.
"If there are businesses on the streets, it could be costly to both the businesses and residents."
Although Mayor Pro Tem John Heilman said he was sympathetic toward petitioners' concerns, he was quick to point out that those residents were fully aware of their street name before they moved in.

Nevada prison inmates building 'chopper' motorcycles
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Legislators were told Monday that the Nevada prison industries program should soon have the necessary approvals to sell high-priced, convict-made motorcycles - through its "Big House Choppers" venture.
Howard Skolnik, who runs the prison industries program, told a legislative oversight panel that payment of a $ 15,000 licensing fee to the state Department of Motor Vehicles will clear the way for sale the custom choppers - at $ 40,000 or more apiece.
"We are producing the only true outlaw motorcycles being produced by outlaws in the United States," Skolnik said, boasting that buyers will even get a certificate that pieces of scrapped prison cell bars went into their bikes - in the form of five-inch-long fender supports.
"Little things like that make these bikes look desirable," he added.
"You know, there's no accounting for bad taste, senator," Skolnik said to state Sen. Bob Beers, R-Las Vegas, who asked for details on the program and its market appeal. "People want these bikes. They really do."
Only two convicts are now working on the choppers and already have produced their first, a cherry-colored motorcycle with a big, 110-cubic-inch engine and a prison guard tower painted on it. But Skolnik said the program eventually will employ 20 to 30 convicts.
Skolnik also said that since word of the venture began circulating a few months ago, he's had inquiries about setting up dealerships in several states. He added that middle-aged and older bikers with money to spare are a key part of "a huge market" of potential buyers of the choppers.
The venture, with the motto "Built with Conviction," started in a small wooden shed at the Southern Desert Correctional Center, but Skolnik said it may be able to move into a 10,000-square-foot area within a large industrial building at the High Desert State Prison. Both prisons are in southern Nevada.
The High Desert space was initially set aside for a California company that wanted to manufacture equipment for brew pubs, but Skolnik told the legislators the company has been "totally inactive" and will be removed unless its Nevada operation is running by mid-December.
The prison industries programs are designed to be self-supporting, so they don't rely on taxpayer money. Inmates can earn $ 5.15 an hour for their work, and in the process learn a trade that will help them on the outside once they're released.
Skolnik said a young inmate who worked with the two convicts who built the first chopper recently was released and, because of the skills he learned in the industries program, quickly got a job paying nearly $ 20 an hour
