Mine didn't/doesn't have the latch either. Never had it open up when I was ridin'

Guess my fat-ass holds the seat down pretty good... LOL

BTW Weasle, do you have both parts of the hinge? I've got a spare "seat" side if ya need it...

Hell, I got a spare OEM seat from a 82 FXR if anyone needs it. Front part only. I'm using the P-Pad part...

mine has the hinge still welded to the frame , but the original, seat , had no latch or the other side of the hinge on the seat. i used some of that saratch out like preacher said , got it clear enough so i can see the oil level , so for the time being im gonna leave it alone. thanks preacher , if it wouldnt be for you old timers , us young un,s would be lost . yea dave , think it was 91 and later they went from the hinged seat you have, to the tab and screw like i have. not one of their better ideas .;)Actually, when I got the bike, the seat that was on it was set up like yours. But, they left the hinge in place. When I bought the solo seat, I switched it to the hinge mount. Otherwise, it was always a PITA to check the oil level...

I had a kawasaki 1500 vulcan one time that had a sight glass for the oil check....  As I recall, was a pretty good size window on it...

No idea since I ain't got one on my FXR. Might be a later model only thing. But, lookin' at that picture I posted, I'm guessing that it screws in to a bung in the tank. Might be as simple as draining the oil (at oil change time) and unscrewing it, and screwing a new one in. Replacing the O-ring of course...

I gotta ask, why the sight glass? My seat is hinged. Its really simple to flip the seat and pull the dipstick. You got a "tongue" under the front of the seat that slips under a piece of flat-bar and tab on the back that takes a screw in to the fender?

Weasle:
Don't know if you can replace it, but before you go to a lot of expense, run over to WalMart and in the autowax section, get a bottle of "Scratch Out" made by JWax/Kit. It is a flat looking yellow plastic bottle. Try working that sight glass with that. Might take a while, but I have polished cloudy out of windshields, gauge faces, and lots of other kinds of plastic that got scratched. Most recently, I polished a pair of taillight lenses for my 63 Ford Van that were so cloudy they wouldnt reflect...like red glass now. No promises, but it don't cost much, here about 2 bucks a bottle. Might be just what you need. If it works, after you get it clear, give it a couple good coats of automotive paste wax. That should stop it from going crummy again.
hope this helps,
RSDF

p.s., no, it will not hurt the seal around the lens.
