Hey Dave I think your coils got a shorted winding.......Both sections should red close to the same................but .4 ohms is way low for an electronic ignition. .4 would be low even for a points coil...........Yeah, my thoughts exactly Steve. I was lookin' for confirmation before I go and spend more $$ on a new coil or set of coils...

Thanks!!

OK, lets try this...

I'm runnin' a single-fire, coil is all in one, rated at 2.4 Ohms and 45,000 volts...Ok?

Set the DVOM to 20 Ohm scale...Ok?

Ran the red lead to the center post, black to the front primary post (Small) and got .4 Ohms.

Ran the black to the same post on the rear, and got 2.8 Ohms.

I'm thinkin' my coil is bad?

I don't have access to a scope. Got a good old DVOM and that's about it.

I don't have a tach on the bike anymore (or the speedo) But, it ran fine Saturday when I test rode it. Like I said, about 20 miles without a hick-up. Sunday was a different story. I'll check to see what the story is on the Tach wire. I'm pretty sure its brown. I thought that I cut it off and taped the end so that it wouldn't ground out...

Can you get your hands on an O scope?  If so check for negative pulses on the red and white wires with the probe referenced to ground, that will tell you if it's a coil problem or a module problem. Also make sure the tach wire is not ground out anywhere along it's length.  I think the tack is the brown wire.....

If you can't get an O scope if you have an old simspon 260 type analog meter you can watch for the dip on the scale when the pulses go negative.

Thanks Steve,

I've already got that. The same sheet came with the kit. Unfortunately, I don't have enough info on what its doing (other than not hitting) to even come up with a decent question on the system yet...

I was pretty disgusted when it happened. I only ran it long enough to determine that I wasn't getting fire from the coil on the front terminal. Didn't run any tests otherwise...

There's no spark coming from the coil on the front. I pulled the wire (at the coil) while it was running and no change it in the way it ran. No spark jumping the gap either.

I'll look at the sensor Weasle. But, my ignition ain't a HD unit. I'm runnin' a Ultima Single Fire. So, I have some checking to do anyway...

dave sounds like the cam sensor rather than ignition , check where the sensor plugs into the ignition wires( under the frame on my fxr). if its worked loose  it wont fire the plugs  or only one , had that problem after i replaced my censor. ps have got a good stock ignition from my 94 if it will fit yours. also pull your nose cone ,and look at the sensor , the square thing in the center should be black if its off color  it might be shot . and of coarse the plug wire itself, good luck.

Well crap! No pictures...

Went out to start the bike, rear tire was almost flat. So, I blew it up, was gonna see if I could figure out where it was leakin' and maybe toss a plug in it. Last time I looked last night, it was still holding air. I don't know...

Then, we (me and the OL) decided to take a spin on it, and it ain't hittin' on the front cylinder. I know that I didn't cause that with the rewire. I never touched those. I got an ignition issue. No spark from the coil for the front plug...

OL is gettin' disgusted with this thing. I'm gonna be rentin' a bagger in a couple of weeks. Hmmmm... :D

Maybe later today. Hopin' to get the OL out with her bike and I'll grab the camera. This is a whole new experience for me. Totally different feel to the bike.

Guess I got about 20 miles on it yesterday. City streets and freeway. Not too bad. Preacher was right about the power-steering thing. Goin' down the freeway, all I gotta do is THINK about changin' lanes, I'm there...LOL...

Pretty comfortable though. Just take a bit of time to get used to...

Got everything done except the front tire. Took it for a spin. City streets and freeway. Gonna take some gettin' used to. Adjustments to my riding style...

So far, I'm happy with the swap...:D

Well, the bike ain't done. But, I'm close. I have to connect a hot wire to the two idiot lights that I'm keeping. (Neutral and Oil) Like a dumbass, I put 'em in place and wired 'em up. Hit the key and nothing. One wire to the sensor, one wire to ground. Hmmm... Yeah, that don't work at all! I'll be correcting that today...

Gotta put the tank back on after I fix that wiring goof. When I started this I had better than half a tank of gas. So, I unbolted the tank, popped the fuel line loose, disconnected the crossover tube and was able to lift the tank off with very little gas spilling. Think I could reverse that process? Oh hell no. I ended up showered in gas. Gas all over the bike, the ground and me. After I got out of the shower, I decided I gotta drain the tank...LMAO!

I've got to pull the side cover off the trans and connect the clutch and adjust it yet. The cable they sold me was for a early model, like a shovel. I swapped the pin in the clutch lever with one for an older model and that end is taken care of.

Front brakes are bled and I don't have any leaks. I used a hard line connected to the banjo-fitting at the master cylinder and then connected to a SS flex down to the junction block. No leaks and a good lever feel, I'm happy...

Should get all of that done today. Still got the front tire and rear master cylinder to take care of. But, it should be rideable sometime this morning...

When I bought the bike, it had these ISO-style grips on it and they've always been comfortable (the brass or copper plating is showing through the chrome) Maybe I just don't know any better. I ran the soft-spongy types on my last bike, I wasn't too thrilled with those either. Grips and the rear-foot-pegs are the last of the "Personal-Touches" left from the previous owner. Short of checking the VIN, he'd never know it was the same bike...

Yeah, I've looked at those metal grips and thought that they'd be terrible after the bike sat in the sun (or cold) for any length of time. Definitely not something I want to deal with.

Vacation day today...
Gotta get my ass in gear and finish the wiring. So, I'll make a parts run for some 16 ga. wire and some odds and ends...

Also down to the indy to see what we can do about the clutch cable. One thats on it has a loop at the end for the lever, new one has a slug (I guess that's what you'd call it) on the end in the same place. Not sure what I'm gonna have to do. Get a new cable or a new lever that will work with this one...

Maybe I'll see what the indy has for grips while I'm there. Last time I was in, I looked into some new mirrors. My mirrors are both cracked and have pieces missing. Time to replace 'em. Thinking about just running down to Homer Depot and getting a piece of mirror and a glass cutter, try making new lenses on my own. Wouldn't cost much and its gotta be cheaper than replacing the heads on the mirrors...
